Henrietta Maria was only 15 when she left France to marry Chales I. For many of his subjects she was his evil genius, a self-willed, interfering Roman Catholic, capable of ruining them all. For Charles himself she was a delightful consort, as lively as she was unpredictable. Neither of them saw the growing troubles around them but when civil war erupted, Henrietta threw herself wholeheartedly into fighting for the royal cause. She travelled Holland in an attempt to pawn the Crown jewels and even marched at the head of her own army. Her heroic efforts and hair-raising voyages read like an adventure story in their own right. Following her success with "Queen of Scots" and "Bonnie Prince Charlie", Dr Marshall once again brings history to life for the general reader.
