About the book >.>.> The subject of this biography-welcome but overdue, as is the British way-was the Guderian, and in some ways also the Rommel, of the British Army. Significantly, both these two great leaders of the German Panzer Forces regarded him admiringly as their exemplar, and the prime practitioner of the technique they applied. Yet also in the British way, he was never given such opportunity of command in war as they obtained, although before they even emerged he had made an outstanding mark on the development of armoured forces everywhere. But he went on to become the main influence on the further developments that became decisive in the final stage of the war. Christened Percy Cleghorn Stanley Hobart, he disliked his primary baptismal name Percy, and only readopted it, in deference to his mother, on being knighted. His family and intimate friends called him 'Patrick' while in the Royal Tank Corps, and throughout the Army, he was always known as 'Hobo'.
