The Asian region encompasses some of the world's most populous and burgeoning megacities and some of its most delicate uninhabited natural ecosystems; its economies range from subsistence farming through traditional heavy industries to leading high-technology enterprises. These extreme situations pose major challenges in water pollution control and environmental management. The IAWQ's series of Asian Regional conferences is now a well established forum for experts to consider these problems from an Asian perspective and share information and experience. The 35 papers selected for inclusion in this issue cover the impacts of pollution on receiving waters, water quality issues in drinking water supply, and biological and physicochemical treatment processes for municipal and industrial wastewaters. They provide valuable insights, not only into the priorities for the Asian water environment, but can also be adapted to the needs of the rest of the globe.
