This book covers the basic approach to developing information systems. The central theme is the information systems development life cycle, and a detailed description follows from the early planning stages and the feasibility study through to implementation, review and maintenance. The modern information systems life cycle presented draws upon the techniques of structured systems analysis and design, producing a framework for information systems development as a whole. It also draws on other sources, such as the use of rich pictures in soft systems methodology. It describes how modern software tools, along with the technology infrastructure, can make the job easier. Organisational and people issues are stressed as much as the technology. It is intended for first undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This book can be used as a "prequel" to Avisons and Fitzgerald's "Information Systems Development - Methodologies, Techniques and Tools", but also in computer science and business courses where information systems do not go beyond a first course, or a second course is an option.
