This text was written in response to the ACM/IEEE curricula '91 Task Force recommendation to recognize the importance of understanding the social issues surrounding computing. It presents the research that has been done by social scientists with respect to technology's role in computing. The authors provide readings that illustrate the debates about the uses of technology rather than merely stating them. Topics covered include, the risks of technology, computers at work, computers, power and human rights, and computers, education and ethics.
