Speckled page edges. Patterned endpapers. Internally in fine condition, including the maps: all clean, fresh and bright without inscriptions, foxing or other markings. Externally, there is minor wear to the black buckram boards but the gold, silver and green of the Tolkien-designed decoration are almost immaculate. The spine is a little faded with some serious rubbing to the gilt lettering and borders. The slipcase has rubbing to all edges and some general marking. Bound in very good original black buckram heavy wide weave cloth with very bright gilt silver and green embossed illustration of Tolkien's Numenorean throne to upper board, very slight smudging visible to upper at certain angles, else very good. Spine has imposing shelf presence, with bright gilt ruled frame, compartments and lettering. All edges of leaves clean with speckled green decoration. Housed and protected in such great condition by original black slipcase rubbed to extremities. All three volumes of The Lord of the Rings are here contained, possible due to the fine grade of paper; '10 on 11 point Pilgrim Type by Hazel Watson and Viney of Aylesbury'.
