Part I introduces the galleries and museums where art is seen and discusses the special role played by the audience in the interpretation of art. Part II builds the skill of interpretation by analyzing the elements and principles of art as the artist's tools of expression. Part III describes the various mediums, from graphic through painting and sculpture. Contemporary studio practice informs the point of view, but the artist's technical practices take second place behind the general understanding a collector or member of the audience needs to interpret the significance of the art. Part IV surveys the vast field of applied design in architecture, city-planning, interiors, clothing and industrial design. Developments in technology and structure have played major roles in the applied arts. Historical comparisons help make these developments clear. Part V is a selective history of art styles, concentrating on those of special contemporary interest, including ancient American, Classical and Hellenistic Greek, Renaissance, and Baroque.
