Facsimile of the 1921 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Missoula, Montana, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city of 12,688 people, from the brick blocks of Higgins Avenue, Main and Front Streets and the Northern Pacific yards, across the Missoula River to the south side and the University of Montana under Mount Sentinel, up Rattlesnake Creek past Greenough Park, and out to the Polley's Lumber Company mill, the Western Montana Fair Grounds, the Missoula Country Club, the greenhouses and the County Poor Farm. The seventy-three numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, garages and theatres along Higgins Avenue and Main, Front, Pine, Cedar, Stevens and Woody Streets - the Missoula County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the Federal Building and Post Office, the Public Library, the Chamber of Commerce, the Masonic Temple, the B. P. O. E., Montana, Hammond, Smead-Simons and First National Bank buildings, the Higgins and Union blocks, the Y. M. C. A., the Missoula Mercantile Company's department store, the Wilma, Liberty, Rialto and Bijou theatres, and the Florence, Palace, Kennedy, Missoula, Penwell, Victoria and Western hotels - through the Northern Pacific depot, freight house, shops and repair yards, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul passenger and freight depots, the Missoula Street Railway car barn, the Missoula Light and Water Company's plant, the Missoula Gas Company, the Polley's Lumber Company's saw mill and yards, the Missoula White Pine Sash Company's mill, the Morin, Western and Interstate lumber yards, the Ravalli Flour and Cereal Mills, the Garden City Brewing Company, the Missoula Creamery, Ice, Iron Works and Laundry companies, the J. In 1921 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Missoula for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch, the University of Montana, the railroad repair yards, the lumber mills and the Fair Grounds at one hundred feet to the inch, and the congested district at two hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
