Facsimile of the 1912 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Billings, Montana, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city of 15,000 people, from the stores, hotels and theatres of Montana Avenue and First and Second Avenues North, the County Court House and the Union Depot, through the Northern Pacific and Great Northern freight yards, wholesale houses and implement warehouses, to the Polytechnic Institute, the sugar factory and power plants and the residential streets of the North Side and the South Side.

The thirty-seven numbered map sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres along Montana Avenue, Minnesota Avenue, First, Second and Third Avenues North, Twenty-seventh Street and Twenty-eighth Street - the Yellowstone County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the Post Office, the Parmly Billings Public Library, the Chamber of Commerce, the Masonic Temple, Coliseum Hall and Industrial Hall, the Babcock and Acme theatres, the Grant, Elk, Northern and Commercial hotels, the Cottage Inn, the Boykin House, the Orpheum lodgings, the Y. M. C. A. and the Y. W. C. In 1912 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Billings for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
