While Nuremberg was a collective trial, it is through the life stories of the oddly mixed collection of the leadership of the Hitler period that the reader will discover the many hidden springs of the National Socialist State and the enormities of the Third Reich. In addition to the twenty~two defendants, six major organizations were chosen as representing the men and groups who had brought Hitler to power, and kept him there against the wrath of almost the entire world. As the author states, faulty as the trial was from a legal point of view, "a catharsis of the pent~up emotions of millions of people had to be provided and a record of what had taken place duly preserved for whatever use later generations would make of it. The record would not completely document the infamy in the twentieth century, but it would reveal one vast concentration of evil that could be exorcised." The book is based on seven years of research in the documents of the National Socialist period that have come to light during and since the trial. The author has worked in research centers in Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Nuremberg, London, Washington, and Jerusalem. He has also interviewed scores of people, from everyday citizens to the former heads of the Nazi State; he has talked with survivors of the extermination camps, to prisoners of war, to simple German soldiers, as well as to members of the German High Command. THE TRIAL OF THE GERMANS is, and will remain, an indispensable study of the Nazi period. (With 32 pages of illustrations and full bibliography). N° de ref. del artículo 4032201
