FIRST EDITION in maroon gilt decorated and titling cloth, photos, index, 289pp. This is first printing which states "Published October 1907" on copyright page. Dustin #510. O'Keefe #2148. Very Good- with miniimal wear at extremities and an owner sticker on the front pastedown. Also, there is a photo of younger Schaff pasted to the front pastedown. Schaff knew Custer personally, and here covers Custer's time at the U.S. Military Academy riht up to the beginning of the Civil War. Dustin: "Finely written work covers a crucial period of our history, mentions Custer several times and the strained relations of the period are well treated, a revealing book." Occasional grey thumb-marking present throughout. Brown water drop through pages 201-205. Plates are bright and clear, with slight tanning and foxing to edges. Boards have light shelf-wear with minor corner bumping and mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a subtle forward lean. Heavy sunning to spine. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.
