Louis F. Budenz, who made headlines with his testimony before various Congressional committees and during the recent trial of the eleven Communist party leaders, was formerly editor of the Daily Worker, the leading Communist newspaper in this country. For ten years he stood high in the secret councils of the party. Now a professor of economics at Fordham University, he broke with the party in 1945 and subsequently returned to the Catholic Church. His revelation in this book of the scope and thoroughness of the Communist conspiracy in the United States is based upon actual Communist documents which prove conclusively that the surface and subsurface activities of American Communists are Moscow directed and have but one objectivethe overthrow of this government by violence and world domination by the Soviet Union. Mr. Budenz not only exposes the exact nature of the Moscow link, and names names, but tells in detail how the Communist machine works in the United States. He describes the organization and discipline of party members: the hundreds of apparently innocent techniques used for securing the cooperation of loyal citizens to further Communist ends; he knows and reveals precisely how party members work their way into key positions in the government, in business, industry, labor, intellectual, artistic and scientific circles; how they enlist recruits~both witting and unwitting~how they set up their front organizations, capture control of labor unions, influence foreign policy, and manipulate political candidates. Here then is an explicit and authoritative indictment of communism and Communists operating in key positions in the United States. Written with restraint and serious purpose, it is a book no thinking American, whatever his politics, can afford to disregard. For Louis Budenz, more than anyone who is qualified and dares to speak, knows the individuals who have been working as Communists to the injury of America during, and since World War II and in this book, five years after his disillusionment with the party, he exposes them to the merciless light of publicity.
