Original dark green cloth gilt illustrated and titled in English and Arabic 26 x 35cm. Printed and engraved at the Government Press, Basrah. (104)pp illustrated with b/w photos throughout, with title, contents and captions in English and Arabic. This is the first edition c1918, undated with no edition stated. Covers very presentable, neatly and professionally rebacked, retaining the original backstrip, with careful repair to a tear to the cloth on the lower board. The text block has been restitched and rebound with new endpapers. The interiors are very good with some foxing, a small chip to a couple of fore-edges (not affecting text or images), and light wear to others. The photos are arranged in four sections: Groups and portraits, Local events, Views, and a Tour through Central Arabia. The heading for the latter states "the pictures were taken by a British Officer touring through Central Arabia with an escort of Arabs", which identifies the author / photographer as Philby during his mission to Ibn Saud in late1917. Philby appears in local attire in one of these photos, captioned "The Tourist (standing in centre) and a part of the Escort". Contrary to the official British position, Philby favoured Ibn Saud over Sharif Hussein as a potential King of the Arabs, and sought to demonstrate that it was he who had control over the Arabian Highlands. Aerial views would have been taken by the RAF. N° de ref. del artículo 4549
