Limited edition in a fine binding by Trinckvel. One of 1,060 copies on Arches paper, of a total edition of 1,128. This copy is unnumbered and was one of 68 copies not for sale. It is stamped "HC" for hors commerce. A big, beautiful French edition of this classic parable by Gide (1869-1951), French author and Nobel laureate. The story of a philosophical and spiritual quest through the Algerian desert by a prince and his followers. First published in 1896 with the subtitle, "The Treatise of the False Prophet." All text is in the original French. Nicely illustrated from engravings colored by [Maurice] Beaufumé. 68, (1) pp. + colophon / edition statement. Original front paper wrap bound in; several blank leaves added in both the front and rear. A large, impressive volume. 11.25 by 9 inches. Bound in red Morocco leather (spine and corners)with marbled paper sides. Matching endpapers. Gilt decorated spine. Raised bands enclosing author/title in two compartments. Top edge gilt; other edges untrimmed. Binding is signed with the small stamp "Trinckvel." VG with modest wear and rubbing. Sound, tight binding. Joints and inner hinges are secure.
