CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 9th Massachusetts Infantry, also known as "The Fighting Ninth", participated in several key battles during the war and is identified as one of the Fox 300 Fighting Regiments. When the Civil War erupted, more than 1,000 Irish Americans formed the Ninth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment, the first of the state s ethnic regiments. This history of the regiment by Daniel Macnamara, who served as its commissary sergeant and rose to become regimental quartermaster. The regiment was engaged at Hanover Court House, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and other battles on the Peninsula and with the Fifth Corps.
