[Colophon]: "This edition consists of 150 copies for sale in England by James Tregaskis and Son, and 180 copies sold in the United States by Edgar H. Wells & Co. Inc." [with Caxton Head device]. 6 in. x 9 1/4 in., 14 pp. + 94 pp. facsimile catalogue, books are classed by their sizes, languages; over 2500 items listed with printed prices. Printed on a laid paper, with F. J. Head & Co. watermark. Black cloth spine and sides, with title gilt on spine, light gray paper-covered boards. Slipcase not present. With former owner's printed book label on the front paste-down (he was a collector of 18th century English authors, including Sterne, and has added a small, early engraved bookplate, above his own label, this bookplate might have some connection with Sterne, or his period). Cover edges show light wear, tanning, tanning to the early bookplate (featuring a standing bird & ball design with axe and other heraldic items), and to the endpapers. The Whibley Preface, traces the influence of certain books that Sterne owned, such as Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, and others, on Tristram Shandy. Also mentioned in the Preface are Caxton's Game and Playe of the Chesse [chess]; Gerard's Herbal, Rabelais & others. [Partial title-page]: "A Catalogue of a Curious and Valuable Collection of Books, among which are included the Entire Library of the late Reverend and Learned Laurence Sterne, A.M. Prebendary of York [-]. Author of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gent. and several other works of Wit and Humour. Most of the Books are in good Condition and handsome Bindings.
