The author left the UK for New Zealand, for his health, at age 17 in 1877, subsequently spent time in Sydney, New Guinea where he took part in the Annexation in company with Sir Peter Scratchley, the illustrations are all of New Guinea, and later to Melbourne and South Africa. In 1885 the author was Private Secretary to the First Administrator of New Guinea (Sir Peter Scratchley).
