1st 1893. Very good condition with no wrapper. Four children who set off, at the invitation of the King, to join their parents in the land beyond the Blue Mountains. On the way they meet various characters, both good and bad, such as Mrs. Discipline and her father Mr. Penalty, Fungus the Ferryman, Mrs. Steadfast, Mrs. Modesty and Charity the guide. An allegorical tale reminiscent of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Green and blue pictorial cloth, gilt title blocks to front cover and spine. 6 full page b/w engravings plus chapter head and tailpieces. 191 pages. Spine and corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Front endpaper browned. Small price label 'awarded in connection with Chums Empire Map Scheme' on front pastedown. Small foxspots to endpapers and half-title page otherwise the contents are beautifully clean and bright with all plates present. A super copy of this title, exceptionally rare in first edition. This is a Very Good Copy of this book in publisher's original pictorial cloth with title lettering in black to upper cover and with title lettering in gold to spine.There is an oval pictorial plate laid onto the front cover by Helen jacobs which matches that of the coloured frontispiece.There is one previous owner's inscription to the half title page in pencil (so can be erased) and this is dated 1924.The book has a firm binding with no hinge weakness and with no leaning to spine.There is a little rubbing and wear to the outer boards,mostly to head of spine.The contents remain pleasingly clean with just a little light spottting to the fore-edge of the book.The book is undated but would be circa early 1920's This is a more than decent copy of an uncommon title,8vo 280pp. Nº de ref. del artículo: 62531

Juvenile hardback. Four orphans are summoned by the King to travel to his kingdom Beyond the Blue Mountains to rejoin their parents. One brother sister pair proceeds fairly quickly on the upward path, the other takes longer , succumbing to many temptations. An engaging fairytale/allegory "derived from Pilgrim's Progress but set in a flower-fairy children's world" (Bratton) and told in simple language. L. M. Meade, was a prolific Irish writer who essentially established the girls' school story. Original price, from catalogue, was 3/6.
