Rex Battarbee is often referred to as the man who 'discovered' and first trained Albert Namatjira to paint in water-colours.It was almost certainly Battarbee's paintings of their homeland that first induced Namatjira and his aboriginal followers to take up water-colour painting. There is perhaps no higher tribute possible to a painter from his public than the admiration that has been bestowed by a dispossessed native population upon an intruding white man engaged in interpreting for them their own landscape.So writes Mr. Strehlow in his excellent text for this book, in which he elucidates the point as to whether the modern aboriginal artist is justified in painting in the English style with water-colours as a means of personal* expression.Mr. Strehlow's text will also explain the significance of the art movement founded in Central Australia by Rex Battarbee. 1961, Reprint. A near fine copy only marked by light tanning of the edges. The d/w is very good with light edge rubbing and is now in a protective cover.
