Descripción
Number 177 of 182 copies, numbered and signed by Dard Hunter. 1947. 7 7/8 in. x 11 5/7 in. 102 numbered pages and 2 paper specimens; colophon, and (4) pp. prospectus, bound in at back of book. 15 photographic illustrations, and 3 others of plants used in papermaking. Red-brown morocco leather spine with gilt title; specially block-printed oriental paper sides, and matching slipcase by Gray Parrot, Easthampton, with binder s label in back of book. Black paper of slipcase sides shows a little rubbing with loss of some of the black surface (note: the black surface of this "mulberry" paper easily stains the fingers & can be as easily transferred to the pages of this book); some age-related tanning to some pages of text; overall, a fine copy. Scan shows the spine & part of the front cover. [Colophon:] Here ends the monograph relating to my visits to Yen-Thai and Lang-Buoi, the ancient paper villages of Tonkin, Indo-China. The paper used in printing this edition was made in 1932 in my mill at Lime Rock, Connecticut, the only handmade paper mill in America. The title-page device was printed from a woodcut found in Tonkin; the typographical ornaments used as chapter headings, as well as the borders, were cut and cast especially for this book by Dard Hunter, Junior; the woodblock used in printing the cover paper was procured in China. This edition, as well as all of the preceding books from my own press, has been bound by [Gray Parrot] Peter Franck, Sherman, Connecticut. Owing to the small amount of paper available for the printing of this book, and the limited number of specimens, only one hundred and eighty-two copies could be printed, any more than this number would have been impossible. This book is Number 177 [signed] Dard Hunter Mountain House Press, Chillicothe, Ohio, United States of America. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-210477997
