8vo. A unique 1957 piece of Jackie Robinson memorabilia, reflecting Robinson's emphasis that life outside of baseball was more important than the sport itself. Robinson once told Hank Aaron "the game of baseball is great, but the greatest thing is what you do after your career is over.", and after his career was over, he became and active and influential player in the Civil Rights movement, despite increasing health concerns as he aged. Robinson remains one of the most important African-American cultural icons in American history. he was the first to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball, the first black to be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the first in any major American sport to have his uniform number retired universally across that sport. His influence is beyond measure. This particular piece comes from the estate of the late Washington, DC African-American doctor, Lewis W. Marshall, who was attending Howard at the time as a post-graduate medical student, receiving his own medical degree from Howard in 1959. Marshall was a Professor at the university's medical school and also served as a guest lecturer for three decades following his professorial days. Typographical wraps. Staple binding. This program is complete in 18 pages. The names of Robinson, MLK, and Patrick Murphy Malin, who served as the second director of the American Civil Liberties Union, serving from 1950-1962, appear within the program as Honorary Degree recipients. Mild age toning to wraps with a few very shallow creases. This historic piece comes with provenance to substantiate its authenticity, including the obituaries of Marshall and that of his third wife (whose passing originated the estate sale), as well as an advertisement for the sale with this piece pictured. Also included are various official addresses, linking the piece to the home and medical practice of Marshall. Overall an important piece of post-MLB Robinson ephemera, and a fine addition to any modern-day Black Americana or Baseball collection. N° de ref. del artículo 17350
