THE FREEMASONS ARMS, 146 THE GREEN, DARLASTON, WALSALL. Original Antique Photograph, circa 1905. Photographer unknown. Mount measures approx. 9.75" x 8" (24.75cm x 20.25cm). Photograph itself measures 6" x 4.25" (15cm x 11cm). The Freemasons Arms was originally owned by the Bloxwich Brewery Co. Ltd, though by 1924 was owned by the William Butler brewery, of Springfield, Wolverhampton. This image shows a large poster in the window, advertising Chas. A. Lester's 'A life For A Life'. There is also a smaller poster which appears to show a large football with 'WANDE' showing beneath. Possibly part of the word 'Wanderers'. Beneath are listed the pub's registered occupants around the time the photo was taken. 1901 Census: 146, The Green ? Public House [1] Samuel Dowen (29), innkeeper, born Darlaston. [2] Ellen Dowen (34), wife, born Darlaston. [3] Sissy Walsh (12), stepdaughter, born Darlaston. [4] Ellen Dowen (2), daughter, born Darlaston. [5] Tom Dowen (4 months), son, born Darlaston. Card mount is foxed, scuffed and discoloured, with a partial crack to the rear surface. Photograph is showing fading and some discolouration commensurate with age. It remains an interesting and quite possibly unique original image nonetheless.
