Gen. in Regular Army (August 1861), relieved Fremont as commander of the Dept of the Missouri, expanded to the Dept of the Mississippi, advance on Corinth, 1862 General in chief, became chief of staff when Grant became General in chief. Post War Career Army service, commanded Depts of the Pacific and the South. Notes An effective administrator but a poor field commander.
