Daniel Webster, a towering figure in 19th-century American politics, distinguished himself as a statesman, orator, and constitutional lawyer. Born in Salisbury, New Hampshire, in 1782, Webster rose to prominence as a leading member of the Whig Party. His eloquence and legal acumen were evident in landmark cases such as Dartmouth College v. Woodward, where he successfully defended the sanctity of contracts against state interference. Webster's participation in the famous Webster-Hayne Debate underscored his commitment to preserving the Union and opposing the concept of nullification. His Seventh of March Speech in 1850, supporting the Compromise of 1850, aimed to ease sectional tensions but drew criticism from abolitionists. Serving as Secretary of State under three presidents, Webster negotiated the Ashburton-Webster Treaty with Britain, resolving border disputes. Despite his political achievements, Webster's legacy is complex, reflecting his efforts to balance national unity with pressing sectional issues, particularly regarding slavery.Published by Johnson Fry & Co.
