[4], 112pp, [4]. Parallel Latin and English texts. With an engraved frontispiece and two final leaves of publisher's advertisements. Recent red half-calf, marbled boards, lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed. Leaves toned, later inked ownership inscription to head of title page, occasional spotting. The work for which William King (1663-1712) is chiefly remembered, a burlesque ode to culinary endeavours, first published in 1708, occasioned by physician and naturalist Martin Lister's (bap. 1639, d. 1712) edition of Apicius's De Arte Coquinaria (London, 1705). The poem offers both practical advice and satirical recipes for incongruous dishes. The facetious letters to Lister and others, at the beginning and end of the volume, are thought to have provided Pope with inspiration for his Dunciad. ESTC T22443. Size: 8vo.
