This volume prints the proceedings of a symposium held in April, 1977, to study the region around the Greek port city of Kavala, the second largest city in northern Greece and a region with a rich and long history. The focus of the papers given is on Kavala and Macedonia in the 18th and 19th centuries, as the region transitioned from Turkish rule to independence. Most of the text is in Greek, with a portion in English at the conclusion which summarizes the studies. The plates include maps, facsimiles of documents, and photographs of ruins and antiquities.
