Worcester furnished fivegovernors of the Commonwealth between 1808 and 1869; it was to Eli Thayer that the credit of colonizing Kansas with anti-slavery supporters was largely due; George Bancroft was its historian; and Isaiah Thomas, who established the Worcester Spy in 1770, opened the first printing office in any city in New England.
