Paris, Michaelem Sonnium, 1575 - 1576. 9 volumes bound in three, thick folio, printed in double column with woodcut initials. FIRST EDITION, [some volumes with 1576 date on title, perhaps denoting a second issue], with the ninth index volume bound at the end, but without the appendix volume published later in 1579. ' It contains the writing, some complete, some fragmentary, of our two hundred Fathers, many published for the first time. Particular care was given to the elucidation of texts corrupted by heretics. This work was the pioneer in the field of critical patristics.' The work was enlarged in the second edition printed in Paris in 1589, though certain texts were removed from that edition on the insistence of the Church who regarded La Bigne's work with great suspicion. The work passed through several further editions in the 17th Century, the last of 1677 being in 27 volumes. This work is a monument to Humanist patristic scholarship. 3 vols volumes. Binding: contemporary calf, worn and slightly chipped , finely restored spines, some restorations on covers, some worming of surface leather, internally with only minor faults, in generally good clean condition throughout.
