Two volumes, both first editions, in quarto (26 x 20.5cm & 29 x 23cm). The second volume, which completes the work, published De L'Imprimerie d'Hacquart, 1808. Containing sections on the Archimedian screw, specific weight of bodies, road building in France and England, details of bridges such as Blackfriars, Westminster, London & Coalbrookdale, description of the marine worm, a lenghty table charting weight, durability and density of building stone from all over France, description of a machine invented by Perronet to test the crushing strength of materials, an extract from Smeaton's account of the Eddystone lighthouse and a description of hydraulic limes and Betancourt's canal boat lift and inclined plane. Vol. I, pp. [viii],297,[7], Portrait in aquatint & 16 folding engraved plates; Vol. II, pp. x,[2],154, 2 portraits & 10 folding engraved plates. The second volume sometimes, but not always, carries an 4pp insertion of the author's will, perhaps in later issues as he died in 1810, but not present here. The first volume bound in contemporary half morocco, gilt, the head of spine & board corners a little worn, but quite sound. The second volume bound in quarter red morocco, gilt. Some very occasional light foxing. Though not uniformly bound, an excellent set in in original condition, with a neat modern bookplate.
