"John Pine (1690-1756) may well have been the pupil of Bernard Picart, the great French engraver at Amsterdam: he was the best English engraver in the first half of the century. His edition of Horace is engraved throughout, text as well as ornament "The results are a unity between decoration and text which at times suggests Didot';s Horace of 1799; a contrast between thick and thin strokes in the letters which naturally follows from the engraving process but which foreshadows the type design of Baskerville, Bodoni, and Didot; and the wide ?leading'; between the lines of text which did so much to give their pages a brilliant effect." - Printing & the Mind of Man, Exhibition of Fine Printing, no. 105. "The subscription list printed at the beginning of the book must be one of the most illustrious of its kind, naming the great and the good from every corner of Europe, including the kings of England, Spain, and Portugal." - Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Blumenthal, Art of the Printed Book, p. 24 - "a tour de force." Edwin Wolf II, the distinguished director of the Library Company of Philadelphia, and co-author of the great biography of A. S. W. Rosenbach, wrote: "[Pine';s] achievement is an unparalleled marriage of content and illustration." John Pine (1690-1756) began his career as a goldsmith and was a member of the Goldsmiths'; Company. He was also a Freeman of the City of London, an official of the Royal Mint, an Engraver of His Majesty';s Signet and Seals, and, importantly, a freemason. Pine';s books were always expensive publications, and he made wise use of pre-publication subscriptions, which not only defrayed printing costs but also became a form of advertisement and endorsement. Certainly a large percent of the subscribers were connected in some way to Pine';s membership in the fraternal organization of freemasons. The list of subscribers for his Horace reads like a directory of English and European luminaries: political, aristocratic, social and intellectual. Included are: the Prince of Wales, the Prince of Orange, a large gathering of Marquis, Princes, Dukes, Earls, etc., and such literary and artistic figures as: Alexander Pope, Lord Burlington, Colley Cibber, James Gibbs (the architect), George Frideric Handel, Edmond Halley and, of course, Pine';s old friend William Hogarth. The subscribers for the second volume, published four years later in 1737, offers testament to Pine';s ascendant reputation, as new subscribers include: George II, the Holy Roman Emperor, the King and Queen of Spain, Horace Walpole, Richard Sheridan, Jonathan Swift, Edward Harley and Christiaan Huyghens among many others.
