First edition with forty-eight hand-colored plates. After serving in the Civil War, George Fox (1846-1937) studied medicine and began writing and compiling his astounding series of photographic atlases which contain some of the most dramatic and artistic visual presentations of skin diseases ever published. Fox s atlases were the first medical texts to use a new mechanical photographic printing process developed in 1878 called the Artotype, which created a permanent print that did not fade. Each photograph was hand-painted by Jospeh Gaertner, MD, a skilled artist. Many of the photographs were taken by Oscar G. Mason, the official in-house photographer for Bellevue Hospital.
