Descripción 1934. Shanghai, Kelly and Walsh,1934. Folio. Original cloth with photographic illustration mounted to upper cover and title banner to fore-edge of upper cover; pp. 87; numerous illustrations in photogravure, a few with additional colour-printing, colour-printed city map, thumb-nail sketches by F.H. Schiff; a little spotting to covers, previous owner's inscription to front fly- leaf, minimal spotting; a very good copy. First edition. A gentle evocation of Peking using photographs taken with a Rolleiflex and Schiff's illustrations. The photographs show various aspects of everyday life in the city. Schiff's thumb-nail sketches relate a narrative in pictures of Mr Pim and Mr Wu as they observe goings-on in Peking. A fine collaboration between the Dutch author-photographer and Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968) who was born in Austria and came to China in 1930 where he worked as caricaturist for several newspapers and illustrated books. Ellen Thorbecke, who is using her maiden name here, was the wife of the Dutch amabassador to China, a Sinophile, who wrote a few books on Shanghai and other Chinese cities, all splendid book productions, as here. Nº de ref. del artículo: 2091915

Descripción 1934. Hard Cover. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Dust Jacket. First Edition. (Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, Limited 1934). First Edition. Sketches by F H Schiff. Full page colour pictorial map, black and white photograph illustrations, black and white and colour sketches throughout, folio (15 x 10 1/2 inches), cloth covered boards with applied photographic illustration and ribbon with title text on front cover. Ellen Catleen was wife of the Dutch ambassador to China in the 1930’s. Produced in Art Deco Style with Vignette Drawings by Schiff which perfectly compliment the reproductions of the beautiful gravure images of Peking originally taken with a Rolliflex camera. The book itself is VG indeed although the corners are slightly bumped and there is a small damp patch at the top left hand corner of the back board. In the VERY RARE D/W which matches the pictorial boards. A former owner of this copy had reinforced the edges of the D/W by un-necessarily attaching tape to the top and bottom edges of the D/W. This has now been lifted off by an archival restorer (leaving tape residue) and the D/W has been neatly restored in places. This is a scarce book that evocatively captures the cosmopolitan China of the inter-war era. Nº de ref. del artículo: 355490714682
