The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, in the County of Southampton. To Which Are Added, The Naturalists Calendar; Observations on Various Parts of Nature; And Poems, By the Late Rev. Gilbert White, A New Edition, with Engravings, Printed for White, Cochrane and Co., London, 1813, fold-out frontisplate, complete with twelve engravings, one in color, 587 pp, full red morocco, 10.25 x 8 , 4to. In good condition. Later binding with beautiful dated spine. Spine includes gilt tooling of natural elements like a swallow, a running rabbit amongst the ferns, a bee and butterfly or moth. Spine lightly darkened from wear with darkening along the edges of the boards. Gilt finishing bright and clean. Inner dentelles bright and clean. Scuffing to joints with light wear along edges and tips. All edges marbled, albeit faded. Remnants of glue on pastedown from a previously placed plate. Frontis plate severely foxed, but remains in good working order. Light dogearring at corner of plate. Minor offsetting to from each plate in text. Minor age-toning to text with small instances of foxing throughout. Colored plate is vibrant and clean! Free of known markings. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Includes twelve fine engravings, including the folding frontispiece, eight full page plates (one hand-colored), and three vignettes in the text. Gilbert White (1720-1793) is widely regarded as the father of ecology. He was a pioneering naturalist and forerunner of all modern natural historians. This book is one of the most published and popular books in the English language, having never been out of print since its first published in 1789. Charles Darwin claims that he stood on the shoulders of White, and came on a pilgrimage to Selborne as a young man in June 1857. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is just one of the many great English writers and naturalists to have been influence by White. Coleridge called this a sweet delightful book .
