Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine. Spine sunned, a little rubbed, slightly cocked, but overall a very good copy. Portrait frontispiece and 11 other plates, 3 full-page maps, folding map at the rear. First edition. "In writing this book my aim has been to make it a straightforward account of what a very young subaltern, in what must now appear to be a very old war, was called upon to do, and how to the best of his abilities he did it" (Preface), an aim which the author has fully achieved in characteristic style. "Through a combination of assignment and illness, Fuller missed all of the major battles during the war, but he does provide detailed accounts of service on the block house lines, and of commanding a unit of native scouts. In the latter particularly, he displays a regrettably racist attitude" (Van Harteveldt). Not in SABIB; Van Hartesveldt, The Boer War: Historiography and Annotated Bibliography, 424.
