[BURGESS, Thomas]. A LETTER TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE LORD VISCOUNT MELBOURNE, ON THE IDOLATRY AND APOSTACY OF THE CHURCH OF ROME, In Proof that the Church of Rome are Not Fundamentally the Same With Those of the Church of England. By the Bishop of Salisbury [Thomas Burgess]. Fifth Edition. Octavo, disbound self-wrappers, 24 pages, sewn (text begins at title page, and spine is notched where once bound). Last leaf states in type, in year of publication, at close of text: "T. Sarum. Palace, Salisbury, Feb. 27, 1836." Presented in the form of a letter to Lord Viscount Melbourne (in response to his support of the Church Reform Bill), the author argues that the Church of Rome is "idolatrous, imperious and heretical. and subversive of our whole Protestant establishment." (from the text). Uncommon; no copy of this expanded, fifth edition is located by OCLC [which locates two holdings of the 1835 first edition (Aberdeen and Saint Andrews), and one holding each, of 1835 3rd edition (Episcopal Divinity School), and 1836 fourth edition (British Library)]. Former owner's early (illegible) ink name on title page (at top margin, with two small chips at signature). Spine is notched, where once bound (with sheets beginning at title page); moderate foxing and tanning to title page and final text leaf, else a good, sound copy, with text otherwise fresh and clean. Fifth edition; first edition thus, expanded edition ["A Fourth Edition of the following Letter having been published and distributed by a very zealous Protestant and Friend in Devonshire, the present edition is distinguished by a few very material additions made to them relative to the novel introduction of Popery into Ireland. and the total apostacy of the Church of Rome." (dated Feb. 27, 1836, from author's introductory "Advertisement" statement); for the 1835 first edition, see Crumb, 'The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders: A Bibliography, No. 0044].
