LIMITED EDITION. No. 68 of 275 Copies. ** Custom binding features red leather spine and corners, with gilt and five raised bands on rounded spine. Half-bound in leather. Both covers are present but detached, as is spine piece. If case was repaired, this antique book would be in Very Good condition. Covers display commensurate edgewear, with some exposed boards at corners, and gentle to moderate rubbing along some edges. Foot corners are a little softened. Head corner on back displays some scuffs. Spine piece is detached, and exhibits some significant rubbing to ends, on raised bands and along shoulders. Ex Libris book was custom bound by owner, and bears his name in gilt at foot of spine, as well as a coordinating number sticker at head of spine. Binding is remarkably sturdy for lack of spine, overall intact through textblock yet a little fragile. Front feps and half-title page are detached from textblock, and show pronounced edgewear with creasing to foot corner. Some front pages are detached, and exhibit the following signs of age and wear: Half-title page displays horizontal tears and chips along fore edge and a vertical tear to head edge, up to 1". List secured to back pastedown is gently aged. Front fep shows a 2" x 4" chip to right head corner. Corner of page has remained bound to front pastedown. Fep following title page has dry and toned edges, and displays two 3" long horizontal tears to rear edge. Frontispiece shows a 3" crease going diagonally 0.5" across foot corner, as well as a crease going from head all the way down, scarcely affecting illustration. Frontispiece is protected behind intact tissue guard that also shows crease. Illustrations are overall remarkably well preserved, with gentle overall toning and little aging otherwise. Illustrations are bright and clear, and display rare occasional marginal smudges and fingerprints. Interior is remarkably well preserved, with gentle overall toning and an occasional smudge or fingerprint in margin. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Pages, mostly at beginning and end, occasionally display some edgewear, with tears, chips and creasing to corners. Text block edges are deckled, and dusty along head which shows evidence of former tinting. ** Pages not numbered. 11 x 14.25 inches. ** Custom binding features red leather to corners and rounded spine, that also has gilt and five raised bands. ** Volume is lavishly illustrated throughout with full-page B&W reproductions of artworks. Book also features smaller reproductions on text pages. Illustrations feature full captions on opposite page with name of artist, year of creation, dimensions, and description. ** The sale catalog of Robert Hoe's magnificent art collection features paintings first and foremost, presented here with full documentation on splendid plates.
