Grand in-8 (large 8vo), 27.5x18.5cm. French language. The two parts in a single 'Double' volume. Early illustrated editions published c1880, printed by Gauthier-Villars. Half-title and title-page for the combined volume. Half-title, title-page with vignette, and additional illustrated title-cum-frontispiece (at verso of half-title) for each of the two parts. pp(4) / (4)173(3) / (4)223(1); with in-text illustrations. Quarter maroon morocco of the period. Spine with four raised bands, gilt titles & decorations, and black rules. Marbled paper-covered boards. Marbled endpapers. Mis-spelling of 'Noires' in spine titles - a 't' (purposely obscured by darkish spot) instead of 's'. Hinges with a few very minor spot-size grazes. Hide overlapping rear board with surface loss along strip of length 3cm and width up to 0.3cm at upper inner corner. A few minor grazes over surface of front board, board surfaces otherwise slightly rubbed. Board edges a little rubbed, outer corners with slight wear. Unsightly creased & rippled front flyleaf previously detached and amateurishly re-inserted by application of pasted-down white paper strip of width 5.5cm along endpaper hinge, leaving narrowish gap along hinge between flyleaf and half-title (for the combined volume); this half-title with jagged tear along uppermost 5.5cm of inner edge, from foot and perpendicular to which a closed tear of length 2cm into blank area. Slight loss and rounding at tips of upper outer corners up to page 20 of Indes-Noires. Half-title and title-page for combined volume, half-title of Indes-Noires, and final page (Table de Matières) of Le Chancellor & Martin Paz foxed, a scattering of variable mainly-light foxing elsewheres. Contents otherwise lightly toned towards edges, occasionally lightly handling-marked, with a few short corner creases, and one or two minor closed tears confined to margins. Edges of text-block toned. Binding holding firmly and of pleasing shelf appearance; contents generally clean and tight. GOOD copy / en bon état. (Heavy item, overseas shipping at cost.).
