Descripción

Early Medicine in Rapides Parish Louisiana, Compiled by Mary Thornton White, was published by the Standard Printing Company, in cooperation with the Woman's Auxiliary To The Rapides Parish Medical Society, Alexandria, Louisiana, in 1970. Not an ex-library copy, this 6" X 9", 43-page, 43-year-old, First Edition offering is in VG+/VG- condition. Other than some modest yellowing of text's pages and endpapers front and back, the book is very much like new. The dust jacket is in overall decent shape from end to end, but does show some noticeable shelf wear at top and bottom edges of spine, some fading of original red coloring along length of same, and spotty, less noticeable shelf wear along top edge of back cover section of jacket. From Preface, "This history was written as a project of the Woman's Auxiliary to the Rapides Parish Medical Society. The Woman's Auxiliary to the Louisiana [Medical] Society has requested that all the parish auxiliaries submit a history of medicine in their parishes. If I have overlooked any of the pioneer men in the field of medicine in this parish, it was not done intentionally. I have used information from the microfilm copies of the Alexandria Daily Town Talk; from 'Once Upon A River' by Elaine Holmes Brister of Pineville, Louisiana; from Dr. Rudolph Matas's 'History of the Louisiana State Medical Society(Volumes I and II)' and from the family history of their descendants. .There is no record of medical history, as such, in the parish prior to this publication. I have endeavored to include everything that I thought might be pertinent and interesting to the readers." This slender but highly detailed record is exactly what its title suggests. From the start, really, Mrs. White establishes that the earliest doctoring/medicine was influenced almost exclusively by the traditions and then-accepted procedures of French, and some Spanish, doctors(traditions and procedures, incidentally, which closely paralleled one another). Just a few of the medical men noted/discussed in this offering include Ennemond Mueillon, John Casson, Stokes Anderson Smith, Josiah Hale, John P. Davidson, James Alexander White, R.O. Simms, Clarence Pierson, and Walter Murrell. Also includes a brief Bibliography and Index. NOTE: A local, Rapides Parish reader might enjoy/find of great interest the complete listing of all officers of the Rapides Parish Medical Society from 1903-1970. Thank you!!.
