Acerca de

FEATURED IN THE PBS DOCUMENTARY, RED METAL: THE COPPER COUNTRY STRIKE OF 1913. On Christmas Eve 1913, more than six dozen people were crushed to death as they scrambled to flee the second floor of the Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan. Someone had cried "Fire" at the top of the stairs. There was no fire, but the tragedy permanently scarred the psyche of the region. Was the call of "Fire" a tragic error or a calculated action designed to cause chaos? Inaccurate history is like a computer virus: it spreads exponentially. In this expanded and updated edition of Death's Door, which includes new discoveries made since this award-winning book was first published, author and attorney Steve Lehto wades through conflicting news reports, transcripts and other documentation to finally set the record straight.

About the Author:

Steve Lehto is a writer and attorney from southeast Michigan. When Death's Door: The Truth Behind Michigan s Largest Mass Murder was published in 2006, it was named a Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. Since then, he has written two other Michigan Notable Book award winners: Michigan's Columbus: The Life of Douglass Houghton and Chrysler's Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest Creation. He has also written Drawn to Injustice: The Wrongful Conviction of Timothy Masters, which he co-authored with Masters, and The Great American Jet Pack: The Quest for the Ultimate Individual Lift Device. His writing has appeared in Michigan History, Lake Superior, and numerous other magazines and websites. Milo and Wolfy still keep him company as he writes.
