This prominent Republican attorney and banker came to U.S. Grant's adopted hometown of Galena in 1850, briefly editing "The Galena Gazette" before turning to the law; he became president of the Bank of Galena (later National Bank of Galena) in 1864, serving for many years; he also served as state representative (1861-62) and state senator (1876-80); as a Republican civic leader, he entertained not only General Grant but also Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln in his home. ALS, 1p, 5" X 8", Galena, IL, 1862 July 28. Addressed to J.F. Williams. Very good. Mild bit of age toning and slight general wear. Writing on lined stock, McClellan as state representative appears to arrange for payment of a bill for blankets, presumably for soldiers of the 45th Illinois "Lead Miner's" Regiment. "Enclosed I send you vouchers for those Blankets," he pens in his usual bold and homely scrawl. "Lieut Goodwin says, that they should be presented to the Quarter Master at Chicago for payment. I wish you would do so, & as you know all about the Bill, having sold the goods, perhaps you may make such representations as will get the money. Any expenses I will pay." Williams pencils a reply on the verso, noting in part: "The Q.M. says this bill should have been sent for by the QM of the regiment as just & proper & accounted for in his quarterly reports & so stated in the voucher. he advises that it be now so rectd for & sent to me." An interesting exchange. N° de ref. de la librería 32855
