2 vols., 12mo. A few minor spots and ink-marks, some early annotations in pencil. Contemporary, certainly American, mottled sheep, gilt spine labels; small chip at one spine end and a short split at the foot of two joints, free endpapers missing. Ink annotation on the pastedown endpapers of both volumes, "First Fayette Social Library (Out 4 weeks)", with an additional notation for the "Second Social Library Fayette" lined through. First and only edition, and apparently the only work by this author. It is a comprehensive look at the philosophy of education, with the first volume a more generally philosophical overview, and the second beginning with "The Amusements of Children" and proceeding through agriculature and commerce. The author s dedicaton is "To Dr. Kemp, Dr. Wilson, and Dr. Mitchell, Professors in Collumbia College, New York," thanking them "for all the care and tenderness with which you directed my education, and for the fatherly affection with which you have ever treated me when far from my native country." I am unable to track a "Social Library" from this period in any of the towns named after Lafayette, but the most likely candidates, surely, are the ones in New York and Pennsylvania.
