FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. 7-182 plus glossary, biographical and bibliographical index and general index. Map of Greece and 24 illustrations. Original brown boards sound/FINE. Interior clean/NEAR FINE. Previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Dust jacket sound/NEAR FINE. This is a great book for anybody who thinks that vandalism has always been confined to football hooligans and graffiti artists of the lower social classes. The names of such notables as Lords Aberdeen and Byron carved with laborious care on many ancient monuments were the inspiration for Miss Bracken's interest in the artistic rape of Greece in the 34 years to 1834. Her book is a depressing insight into the imperialist mind and it is not just the English and the notable Lord Elgin who feature in the list of plunderers. There are plenty of examples of French, German and even Turkish involvement in the large scale removal of antiquities to their European homelands. The fact that the Greece of 1800 had been a run-down province of the Ottoman Empire hardly provides the excuse for such a calculated removal of historical monuments, and certainly a very feeble excuse for their continuing presence in the museums of European capital cities. Descripción de la librería

We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
