Bound in the most attractive stamped and tooled dun leather. Both bevelled boards are stamped in frame with the words, ' the entrance / of thy word / giveth light ' tooled to three sides and the date A. 1857 D. tooled to the base. The title is stamped to the centre panel with a stamped motif below bearing the tooled words, ' Grace / Liberty / Catholicity. The framing is further decorated to the corners. Four raised, decorated bands to the spine. The leather labels, in black, to compartments 2 and 4 remain, the gilt lettering and decoration still bright. This volume deals with distinguished woman from Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy and Spain; inc. Katharine Von Bora, Jeanne De'Albret and Maria De Bohorques; plus appendices inc. ' Instructions of Henry 11 of France to Oriz, in Relation to Renee, Duchess of Ferrara.' Each page is line framed. All page edges red. The frontispiece lies opposite an engraved half title page. Marbled e.p.s. Illustrated by Godwin James and Thomas George. There is some surface rub and wear to the leather binding. Some browning and foxing mainly to the first and last few pages. The leather between the spine and both boards has begun to split, approx half book length respectively. The boards therefore, though attached, are now delicate. There is a copperplate gift dedication to the frontis verso signed John Higg. The preface is dated Nov 17 1856. Binding remains firm and square. Overall, bar the delicate attachment of both boards, this difficult to locate, and attractive volume is in good condition, and internally can be described as v.g. Size: 5.75" By 7.75".
