22pp. Gathered signatures, stitched, formerly stab-sewn. Soft vertical crease. Foxed and toned. Very good. A scarce account of a court-martial for Colonel John McNeil, who had allegedly forbidden a civilian, John P. Arndt, from entering Fort Howard, near Green Bay in Michigan Territory. Arndt was a known trafficker in illegal liquor, and was banned by Colonel McNeil as a result. McNeil was arrested for lying about giving the order banning Arndt from the fort, but was subsequently acquitted. The text of the present work includes testimony and excerpts from letters supporting the charges made against McNeil, mainly from a most aggrieved Lieutenant James Watson Webb, who truly seems to have it in for McNeil and his two main supporters, General Winfield Scott and Colonel Henry Leavenworth. Very scarce, with only two copies in OCLC, at the New York Public Library and the Boston Athenaeum. An unusual frontier military incident. OCLC 44388082.

Handbill, 7 3/4 x 5 inches. Staple holes near top edge, otherwise fine condition. An exceedingly rare and perhaps unique surviving printing of general orders from New Mexico Territorial Governor and Commander-in- Chief, Lionel A. Sheldon. Here, Sheldon organizes an "Independent Military Company" at both Silver City and Georgetown, both in Grant County. Governor Sheldon also names the officers of each company and orders them to "at once muster and swear in" soldiers, appoint non-commissioned officers, furnish muster rolls to the adjutant general officers of each company, and make "make prompt requisition for arms and ordnance stores." The order is unsigned by the adjutant general. Silver City is still a thriving tourist destination, though Georgetown has become a ghost town. The general orders here likely relate to local dissatisfaction with the ability of federal government troops to protect the thriving mining interests in Grant County, or to perhaps assist federal troops in their ongoing battles with the Apaches. No copies in OCLC.

Broadside. 42 x 29 cm. Enclosed in decorative border. Striking woodcut of a horse attached to a cider mill, 10 x 13cm., above the caption title, followed by approx. 275 words of text in 27 lines. Below the text is an offer by the subscriber Nathan Booth "to build mills, or sell to individual, town or county rights, on the most reasonable terms, to any wishing to avail themselves of this valuable improvement." Some darkening around edges and some faint spotting, but very good overall.
