LORENZANA, Francisco Antonio. Historia de Nueva-Espana. Escrita por su Conquistador Hernan Cortes aumentada con otros documentos, y notas Mexico: Joseph Antonio de Hogel, 1770. First edition of one of the seminal works on the early civilization of Mexico and its conquest. Folio (10 11/16 x 7 3/4 inches; 271 x 196 mm.). [20], xvi, 400, [18, index] pp. With frontispiece engraved by Navarro, folding map of new Spain engraved in 1769, large folding plate of the great temple of Mexico, thirty-one plates of Mexican hieroglyphics, folding map of California (by the pilot Domingo del Castillo in 1541), and a full page engraving of the ancient Mayan calendar. With errata. Contemporary vellum with brown morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Some minor staining to vellum. Spine label a bit chipped. A small professional repair to first folding map. Inner hinges cracked but firm. Some light spotting and a bit of worming throughout. Overall, a very good copy; exceptionally clean, well-margined and in a contemporary binding. An extremely important work containing valuable documents of the history of the conquest of Mexico. In this book Lorenzana (who was the Archbishop of Mexico from 1766 to 1772) reprints three of the Hernando Cortés letters to Charles V, with copious annotations, along with two highly important maps: Alzate's map of New Spain and Castillo's map of the Pacific Coast. The Historia de Nueva-Espana also includes a reproduction of an Aztec codex (engraved on thirty-one sheets), the Matrícula de Tributos, the first native book to be published in Europe. This work is particularly important in that it reveals the economics of the Aztec Empire, which had existed for only a little over a century before the Spanish conquest. The Aztecs first pacified foreign territories through commercial trade, and after their submission, exacted tribute in merchandise and raw materials desired by the Aztec elite in the central highlands of Mexico. This codex illustrates the precise tributes and the quantities of each, extracted on a regular basis like taxes, from the new provinces. "The notes by Lorenzana are of value, being chiefly on local question. This collection led to the appearance of several translations" (Sabin). Medina V, 5380. Palau 63204. Sabin 16938. Wagner, Spanish Southwest, 152. HBS 65456. $16,500.

Folio. (10 1/2 x 7 3/8 inches). Title printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece bound following the title, 2 engraved folding maps, 33 engraved plates (1 folding), plus engraved title vignette and engraved initial on the dedication leaf. Contemporary calf, spine gilt (expert restoration at head and tail of spine). Provenance: Father Faustino Arevalo (1747-1824, signature on front pastedown); Jesuit ink stamp on verso of title First edition of this "important and highly esteemed work" (Sabin), containing the celebrated letters of Cortez to the Emperor Charles V, illustrated with important engravings and two influential maps: a cornerstone on the Spanish colonial conquest of Mexico and the early exploration of southern California. Father Lorenzana, the Archbishop of Mexico from 1766 to 1772, here publishes three of Hernando Cortés' letters to Emperor Charles V, with numerous annotations which provide reliable information on the early civilization of Mexico and its conquest. Besides the allegorical frontispiece showing Cortes presenting the world to the Emperor, the plates include a depiction of the Mexican calendar, a folding view of the great temple of Mexico, and 31 plates depicting an Aztec codex representing the tributes paid by the different towns in Mexico. The maps include a general map of Mexico showing Cortes' route, by José Antonio de Alzate y Ramírez; the second map is an important depiction of the northern Pacific coast of Mexico, the Baja peninsula and southern California, after Domingo del Castillo, being the first map to establish definitively that California was in fact a peninsula and not an island. "Pages 322-328 contain an account of the voyage of Cortes to the peninsula of California and notices of later expeditions to 1769. The map of Castillo was inserted to illustrate this account, which Lorenzana states was copied from the original in the Archives of the Marquesado, that is, of the Cortes family. Since that time the original has never appeared, so we are still at a loss to know whether Castillo or Lorenzana put the name 'California' on the map" (Wagner). [20],xvi,400,[19]pp., plus thirty-six plates (one folding), including frontispiece and two folding maps. Frontispiece bound in after titlepage. Titlepage printed in red and black. Titlepage vignette. Small folio. Later polished green calf, stamped in blind and gilt, all edges marbled. Rebacked in green cloth, retaining much of the original gilt backstrip. Boards rubbed and edgeworn, corners worn. Bookplate on front pastedown (see below), 19th-century ownership inscription on front free endpaper, canceled library stamp on front free endpaper. Six- inch closed tear and earlier repairs to first map (with no loss), earlier repairs to folding plate and upper margin of leaves 2E1- 2E2. Occasional spots of light foxing but on the whole quite clean internally. Overall, very good. This copy bears the bookplate of Hiram Bingham (1875-1956), the important explorer, historian, and Yale lecturer who "rediscovered" the Incan city of Machu Picchu in 1911. The volume was deaccessioned by Yale as a duplicate. A major work concerning the conquest of Mexico and the Southwest, assembled by the Archbishop of Mexico, including printings of Cortes' second, third and fourth letters, an account of his voyage to the peninsula of California, and notices of the subsequent expeditions up to 1769. The inserted section of thirty-one full-page engraved plates constitutes a facsimile of a Mexican codex, with sectional title, transcription and translation relating to the tributes paid to Montezuma by various towns prior to the conquest. The two maps are of particular interest, the larger being a general map of New Spain, and the smaller being a map of the California peninsula which Lorenzana states is based on the original in the Cortes family archives, which appears to have been subsequently lost. The two engraved plates are a folding view of the Great Temple of Mexico, and the Mexican calendar. A significant gathering of historical accounts of the Spanish Southwest, augmented by maps and pictorial matter of the greatest interest. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 152. MEDINA, MEXICO V:5380. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. [10]+xvi+400+[index] with 27 plates one folding and fold out map. Title printed in red and black. Quarto (11 1/4" x 8") bound in original publisher's velum with brown label to spine with title blind stamped. Facsimile of the of the 1770 edition. Limited to 500 copies. Francisco Antonio de Lorenzana y Butrón (1722-1804) Lorenzana was an important figure in Mexican history as a collector and editor. He helped prepare for publication the works of Juan López de Velasco, Juan Suárez de Peralta and Martín Alfonso Tavila. He also published letters of conqueror Hernán Cortés, that included an account of Cortés's voyage to Baja California, as well as later expeditions there to 1769. Hernán Cortés was a Spanish Conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of what is now mainland Mexico under the rule of the King of Castile in the early 16th century. Cortés was part of the generation of Spanish explorers and conquistadors who began the first phase of the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Because of the controversial undertakings of Cortés and the scarcity of reliable sources of information about him, it is difficult to describe his personality or motivations. Early lionizing of the conquistadores did not encourage deep examination of Cortés. Modern reconsideration has done little to enlarge understanding regarding him. As a result of these historical trends, descriptions of Cortés tend to be simplistic, and either damning or idealizing. Condition: Damp rippled, mold to cover, back velum stained else about very good.
