Later edition. Folio, [5ff], pp 512, [37ff]. Text in Spanish, double- column, two volumes in one. Title page in red and black. Originally printed in Lima, Peru, 1603 and 1617 (first part and second part later, under the title of Laberinto de comercio terrestre y moral): the author was a member of the Real Audiencia of Quito, which explains the original Lima imprint. Hevia Bolanos' (1624 - 1750) Curia Philipica is one of the most famous texts of Spanish law in all its aspects. The first book treats of civil and ecclesiastical law; the second, of mercantile, inc. maritime, law. There are numerous editions of the work, but this edition contains many additions, emendations, and a compendious index of 74 pages. The sections on maritime and commercial law are replete with material on the practices and problems occuring in the Indies, incl. slavery. Many references are made to the Recopilacion de Leyes. de las Indias. An essential text for understanding the practice of Spanish law in the "colonial" period of the Americas, i.e., XVIth, XVIIth, and XVIIIth centuries. (It was used as a source by the Texas Supreme Court on a case in the 1950's!) There are half dozen or so notations, on notecard-size pieces of paper, in a contemporary hand, apparently from an early reader of the book, lying in the volume and not part of it. From the private library of Ricardo Olivera, with his neat library stamp on a few pages throughout. The binding is contemporary (i.e., from that period) vellum, title inked on spine, remnants of ties. This is a fine copy, very fresh and clean.
