Soft cover. Condición: VG. 15pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 8 characteristic Harper's engravings, salvaged from a damaged issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume XXIX, No. 172, September, 1864. From the opening paragraph, "Some thirty or forty miles east of the coast of Australia there lay, during the night of the 26th of July, 1853 (which is the depth of winter in that part of the world) , a very small vessel, cutter rigged, and of only 16 tons register. Her condition was deplorable. Her bulwarks were all washed away, and every thing, including the only boat she carried swept off the deck. In addition to this, she was leaking considerably. Her crew consisted of the writer of this, who was captain, a mate, four sailors, and a young man who acted as steward and cook. Besides these the captain had his wife on board. This little vessel was called the Thomas." The author's first-hand account of the survival of the ship's party on the Clarence River, New South Wales, Australia, among natives, after the ship was put to land by a severe storm. Illustrations include a view of the ship in the storm, the ship at the mouth of the Clarence River, the home of the cedar-sutter, a camp scene, and others of general interest. Housed in protective mylar report cover.

(cgc) This issue not in T.P.L., Lande, not Arctic Bib. 1-3, WorldCat, nor Aurora. (Formerly Amicus). On 7 January 1850, Parker Snow was working as a writer in New York when he claimed to have had a paranormal vision of the whereabouts of the missing Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin. He immediately wrote to Lady Jane Franklin with a plan for a search. Consequently, she made him the civil officer of her expedition on board the ketch Prince Albert that explored the Boothia Peninsula for any sign of the missing expedition between June and September 1850, without success. On his return Parker Snow wrote Voyage of the Prince Albert in Search of Sir John Franklin that Lady Franklin used to promote further expeditions. The expedition was under Captain Charles C. Forsyth. This rare edition includes extra letters and dispatches concerning the Franklin search.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. London: Longman, Brown, etc., 1851. 1st edition. Small 8vo. xvi + 416pp. 4 colour lithograph plates (one as frontispiece, and another as an extra title leaf), folding partly coloured lithograph map (showing the Prince Albert's track to and from the Arctic seas). Original blue embossed cloth, with gilt image on front cover of a three-man crew at the top of a mast. Blue patterned endpapers, with publisher advertisements. Bright and very fine. Parker Snow was a clerk with the Lady Franklin-sponsored British Franklin Search Expedition of 1850 aboard the Prince Albert under C.C. Forsyth. The expedition focused on the region of Boothia Peninsula and Prince Regent Inlet, and encountered other ships searching for Franklin. Snow describes their voyage around Baffin Bay, through Lancaster Sound, Barrow Strait, Wellington Channel, Prince Regent Inlet, and Admiralty Inlet. The expedition had originally planned to winter in Prince Regent Inlet and make two exploratory sledge trips, but upon learning that H.T. Austin's party had discovered Franklin's winter quarters on nearby Beechey Island, they decided that the news was sufficiently important to cut short their plans and sail back immediately to convey the findings to Lady Franklin and the Admiralty. [AB 16362 incorrectly noting that Snow acted in the capacity of "ship's doctor"; Snow was a clerk, and mentions in his book on page viii that they had "no regular surgeon" on board).

Full leather. Condición: Good copy. ills Ilustrador. 2vols. 8vo. S.P. FIRST EDITION, 2 vols, 8vo, pp xvi, 376; viii, 368; 6 coloured lithographs, 3 folding maps, contemporary calf binding. Snow led an eventful life, during which, among other things, he led a wild, if not criminal life in Australia (DNB). Acted as amanuensis for Macaulay, and volunteered for a Franklin search expedition. In 1854, he commanded a South American Missionary Society ship transporting missionaries and supplies between Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands and stations on the mainland. A disagreement with the Society's Falkland Islands agent resulted in Snow's dismissal from the command, and A Two Years' Cruise written on his return to England, tells the story of this period. The work sheds much light on the natives, natural history and other aspects of the southernmost part of the Continent, and contains occasional asides on Franklin's fate, which remained a central preoccupation with Snow. His book is an important work that has become scarce.

First edition. Two volumes. 8vo. Publisher's blind stamped navy blue cloth, lettered gilt to the spine. Brick red endpapers with printed publisher's advertisements. Housed in a custom slipcase. A fine set. A little offsetting to the tissue guards, otherwise remarkably clean, bright and fresh both internally and externally. Six colour plates after drawings by Snow. Three folding maps. A beautiful set of Snow's narrative of his voyage to and travels in the South Seas. Snow was one of the great eccentrics of nineteenth century travel and following a Franklin Search voyage in 1850, took command of this expedition to the Southern Seas under the Patagonian Missionary Society. For two years he "carried missionaries and their stores between Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, and stations on the mainland" (ODNB). Unsurprisingly, Snow fell out with the Missionary Society, was dismissed and had to make his own way back to England. There he wrote the present work before squandering the bulk of the proceeds on court action against the Missionary Society. Most uncommon in such pristine condition.
