Pamphlet. Offprint, pp.169-183 (i.e., about fourteen pages), softbound, a plain printed stapled pamphlet in 10x6 inch powderblue wraps. Item is mildly dust-soiled with light edgewear and crimps from handling, the staples are rusted with migration and there are rust-streaks in diverse locations, suggesting that item was stored with other rusting stuff. Else sound, and quite without markings of any sort. Salazar's approach to dictatorial control of "his" Portugal verges on the weird. International Affairs generated the essay: "on my being invited to contribute an article to this Review, it was suggested to me, as being of special interest, that I should deal with the criticism leveled at Portugal in recent years, not only in respect of the Portuguese political system [Salazar's being at liberty to clamp down on liberal protest] but also with regard to our overseas policy. I have expressed in the past the opinion that the world was suffering from a disease which might be termed intolerance of authority." He goes on to defend press censorship as "not excessive". Similarly, an absence of political parties. General Portuguese emotionalism causes citizenry to "lose their customary sense of realities." The text goes on in this fashion; Salazar's cloudy baffle-gab prevents easy quotation, but "intolerance of authority" is a keeper.
