Roualeyn George Gordon-Cumming, (March 15, 1820 - March 24, 1866), was a Scottish traveler and sportsman recognized as the "lion hunter." He held the distinction of being the second son of Sir William Gordon Gordon-Cumming, 2nd Baronet, and Lady Eliza Maria Gordon-Cumming. From an early age, his ardor for sports set him apart. Educated at Eton in England, he commenced his career by joining the East India Company's service as a cornet in the Madras Light Cavalry at the age of eighteen. However, he soon found the climate in India unsuitable for him. Subsequently, after two years of service, he retired and returned to Scotland. During his time in the East, he initiated the assembly of his collection of hunting trophies and natural history specimens. In 1843, he became a part of the Cape Mounted Rifles, yet he chose to pursue absolute freedom and consequently sold out by the year's end. With an ox wagon and a few native companions, he embarked on an expedition into the heart of Africa. His hunting expeditions were primarily concentrated in Bechuanaland and the Limpopo River valley, both areas abundant with significant wildlife at that time.

In the vanguard of the migration from the coastal regions into the dark interior of Africa in the early 19th century were hunters, notably those who shot elephant for the profitable ivory trade. Many wrote of their adventures, some, including the current author, making a valuable literary contributory. Cumming writes of his hunting expedition which started in Grahamstown in October 1843 and took him through land teaming with game to the Orange River and Griqualand West.

There is an interesting small photograph of two serving British Navy seamen taped to the front free endpaper along with their names ( Peter Brown and "Lord" Miller ) and with 3 references to pages in the text doubtless reflecting these two individuals' personal involvement in the war, including the fact that the ship "British Loyalty" was the victim of enemy torpedoes twice in very different parts of the Southern Oceans, once at St. Helena.and again in Addu Atoll. These passages have been underlined by the previous owner of the book one W.F Bolton, who was involved in an attack on a German freighter in Diego Suarez during the war. There is also a letter, loosely inserted, addressed to Bolton and dealing in part with the fate of the "British Loyalty : An extensive number of maps, charts and photographs, many of them fold-out.
