Reseña del editor:
They were inventive, sly and committed, and, lest we forget, they saved England time and time again. They are also, judging from dictionaries, responsible for a high percentage of English slang. That last characteristic aside, the English seaman, from admiral to cabin boy, had his work cut out as the ambitious royal family and a growing merchant class depended on them to defend the realm, attack the enemy, find new parts of the empire to acquire, develop new markets for manufactured goods, and find new sources of raw materials. Bourne wrote this while that empire thrived, and his commentary reflects the general attitude of the day, but he is careful to supply details about training, administration, daily life, operations, battle strategies, colonizing projects and post-service expectations, generally following the careers of explorers and officers.
